 Leather Care

The purchase of a quality leather motorcycle jacket is an investment that deserves proper care. The care of motorcycle leathers is not only for the protection of the natural full grain, but also to preserve the individual characteristics of the fine leather you have chosen. This care falls into three main categories: Cleaning and maintenance, weather proofing and storage - You can’t wear your  leather motorcycle jacket all the time.

Proper cleaning, which includes occasional professional cleaning, and conditioning, will not only restore the natural oils but keep the leather soft and extend the life of your purchase. The need for cleaning and conditioning will depend on how often and where you ride. For most riders, we recommend that through your riding season that you clean and condition your motorcycle jacket every twelve weeks; riding in climates that are drier or wetter than others will require that you clean and condition with greater frequency. It is recommended that if you were to be caught in a rainstorm, to dry it out thoroughly, which is simply hanging it on a broad hanger, not wire, to help maintain it's shape and away from direct heat. If it dries too quickly it may crack. Also after the unfortunate act of being caught in a rainstorm, one should recondition your leathers soon thereafter.

Here are a few highlights on how to care for your leather motorcycle apparel so you can be riding in style for years to come!

  • Choose the correct cleaning agent for your garment - most of the time this is simply water.
  • Never use saddle soaps, oils, all purpose cleaners or solvents
  • The cleaner should preserve the natural oils present in leather, not deplete them
  • A cleaner specifically labeled from leather is safest
  • Once you decide on a leather product, test it its effects on an area that will not show, in case it leads to discoloring or spoiling of the texture
  • Conditioners are not required day-to-day care, however they are beneficial because of the fats and oils they contain but should only be used when needed
  • Apply conditioner to your leather apparel items every three months to ensure it's protection from the elements and to keep them looking their best
  • Wet leather should be clean and dry before conditioning
  • If you live in an arid climate, the leathers may need frequent conditioning
  • Clean using a damp cloth or sponge and blot, not rub dirt or dust away
  • Do not store your leather in plastic bags or other non-porous storage containers - they need air!
  • Do not fold you garments, hang them on a wide padded hanger and avoid wire hangers
  • Take your leathers out riding as much as possible, it will be good for both of you!
